Chatuchak Market

I’m not sure why the scene makes me smile so.

This is Chatuchak Market in Bangkok, Thailand. It is part state fair, part pop-up store, part hardware store, part flea market.  15,000 vendors of nearly everything imaginable. High end art to nearly free flip-flops and everything in between. And it happens every weekend, holiday or no.

I was there with Mrs. S.A.M. who is the market queen. And truth be told, I enjoy it too.  I can go about 3-4 hours. With a full wallet and a sherpa, Mrs. S.A.M. could go 8-10 hours. It was hot. It was crowded. At about hour number 4.5. I came upon the scene below.

There amidst tens of thousands of shoppers and wanderers were these two guys. They just pulled up two benches in the middle of the street. I’m not sure about the get-up. Maybe it helped him feel the part.  I don’t think they were busking for change. His hat was firmly on his head and there was no cup anywhere. I thought maybe the older guy seemed to be giving the younger guy a lesson, but looking at the banjos, the cowboy’s certainly was the more worn of the two. No matter, these two were just enjoying the moment.

Watch! The fun starts about 20 seconds in.
